Sorting out sway control and weight distribution
The two get shelved together, but they fix different faults. Weight distribution shifts tongue load off the tow vehicle's rear axle and spreads it front to back, so the front tires carry their share and the truck steers and stops the way it did unloaded. Sway control resists the side-to-side push that wind and traffic create. A lot of current kits handle both in one unit, though it still helps to know which job you're shopping for.
- WD Kits. Complete weight-distribution hitches with spring bars, a head, and usually integrated sway control: Fastway e2, Equal-i-zer 4-point, Reese Steadi-Flex, and Eaz-Lift. Begin here if you're outfitting a travel trailer from the ground up.
- Sway Control. Standalone anti-sway gear: friction bars, Equal-i-zer frame bracket kits, plus Safe-T-Plus steering stabilizers and Hellwig sway bars for Class A and C motorhomes.
