Where to start with RV heating
Most RVs heat with a 12-volt, propane-fired forced-air furnace ducted through the floor. When it quits, the fix is usually a single part rather than a whole unit. When a furnace is genuinely finished, or you've outgrown its BTU output, a replacement bolts in without much drama. And plenty of owners add a second heat source to stretch their propane and spare the battery. The three categories below split along those lines:
- RV Furnaces. Full replacement forced-air furnaces from Suburban and Dometic, 25,000 to 42,000 BTU, in low-profile and vertical/horizontal-mount styles.
- Furnace Parts. The pieces that fix a furnace instead of replacing it: sail switches, combustion air wheels, burner gaskets, vent caps, and the floor and wall registers the ducting feeds.
- Portable & Space Heaters. Electric wall-mount and fireplace heaters plus Mr. Heater propane Buddy units for the nights you'd rather leave the main furnace off.
Troubleshooting a no-heat furnace? Start in Furnace Parts, since a bad sail switch or a dust-clogged combustion wheel accounts for most failures. Shopping for a whole unit or a backup heater instead, the other two categories are where to look.
