Sway Control
When a crosswind or a passing rig shoves the flank of your trailer, the back end starts to swing, and an unchecked swing only grows. Sway control counters that motion two ways. On a trailer, friction devices and integrated hitch brackets add resistance at the coupling; on a motorhome, steering stabilizers and heavier sway bars stiffen the chassis itself. Choosing sway control for your rig
Your fix depends on what you drive. A travel trailer sways because the box behind the truck catches wind and its load shifts sideways. A motorhome wanders because a tall, heavy body leans on a chassis that was never sprung for it. Two causes, two sets of hardware.
- Friction and integrated sway (trailers). BulletProof's friction-bar system adds drag at the hitch, while Equal-i-zer's bracket kits are the frame-mount hardware behind their integrated 4-point setups. Friction bars stay simple and cheap; the integrated brackets check sway before it builds and don't need unhooking to back up.
- Trailer frame fit. The Equal-i-zer sway control bracket kit clamps 3" to 6" trailer frames rated 6,000 to 14,000 lb. Measure your frame height and match the weight range, since a bracket that won't clamp square won't hold.
- Motorhome steering stabilizers. Safe-T-Plus bolts to the steering linkage to re-center the wheel and take the dart out of wind gusts and rutted pavement. There's a tie-rod kit for the Freightliner XC chassis and a bolt-on unit for Class A and C coaches under 30 feet, so match it to your chassis.
- Sway bars (motorhomes). Hellwig solid chromoly bars, a 1-3/8" front for the Ford E350/E450 and a 1-1/2" rear for the 2008-2011 Sprinter 3500, cut body lean in corners and gusts. They're chassis-specific, so confirm your year and model before ordering.
