How to choose an RV surge protector
A surge protector is really cheap insurance against a real problem: the power pedestal at a campground was wired by whoever built the park, is maintained rarely, and is shared with dozens of other rigs. Spikes are only part of it. The more common damage comes from low voltage — when the pedestal sags under load, your air conditioner's compressor keeps trying to start, draws more current to make up the difference, and cooks itself. A basic surge protector won't catch that; an EMS will.
That's the first decision. Here's what actually separates one unit from the next:
- Surge-only vs. full EMS. Surge-only models clamp high-voltage spikes and are rated in joules (roughly 2,000 on the low end to 4,600 on the high end — more joules means more and bigger hits absorbed). An Electrical Management System adds automatic shutoff for low and high voltage, open grounds, reversed polarity, and frequency problems. If you camp anywhere with questionable power, the EMS pays for itself the first time.
- 30-amp vs. 50-amp. Match the protector to your coach's shore power cord, not to whatever pedestal you find. A dogbone adapter changes the plug shape, not the protection rating — a 30-amp unit run through an adapter still only protects a 30-amp circuit.
- Portable vs. hardwired. Portable units plug in at the pedestal and move between rigs, but they sit out in the open, so a lock hasp keeps an expensive one from walking off. Hardwired models mount inside the bay, out of the weather and out of sight — the better call for a rig you keep.
- Monitoring. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi models report voltage, current, and error codes to your phone, which turns a mysterious "why did the power cut out" into a low-voltage readout you can actually act on.
- Weatherproofing. Anything living on the pedestal should be sealed against rain — look for a weather-resistant or IP-rated housing.
