RV A/C Units

Swapping a rooftop air conditioner sits within reach of most owners, since the units drop into the standard 14-by-14-inch roof opening. This category carries whole units from Coleman-Mach and Dometic in 13,500 and 15,000 BTU, including the quieter Mach 3 PowerSaver and the higher-SEER FreshJet 3, in both white and black.

Choosing a rooftop RV air conditioner

Two specs settle most of the choice: cooling capacity in BTU, and how the air reaches the cabin, ducted or non-ducted. Get those to match your rig and features like noise and efficiency fall into place.

  • BTU and rig size. A 13,500 BTU unit like the Coleman-Mach Mach 3 Plus handles most vans and smaller trailers. Larger fifth wheels and motorhomes, or anyone camping in real heat, are better served by a 15,000 BTU unit like the Dometic Brisk II. Bigger is not always better when your power source is limited.
  • Ducted vs. non-ducted. Ducted rigs push air through ceiling ducts and need the matching ceiling assembly; non-ducted units blow directly from the unit through a ceiling grille. Match the unit and interior kit to how your RV is built.
  • Noise and comfort. Quiet-series units like the Coleman-Mach Mach 3 PowerSaver run noticeably softer, which counts for a lot when the unit cycles all night over the bedroom.
  • Efficiency and power draw. Higher-SEER units like the Dometic FreshJet 3 pull less current for the same cooling, easing the load on a generator or a marginal pedestal. On generator or 30-amp service, efficiency and a soft-start-friendly unit earn their keep.
  • Color and profile. Standard and low-profile housings differ in height and wind drag, and units come in white or black to match the roof and rig.

Before you buy, confirm your roof opening and existing ceiling assembly, and plan for the electrical load; a big unit on a long run wants a solid shore power cord to hold voltage. Keep the wear items from A/C parts and filters on hand, and add a cover or shroud to protect the new unit from the sun that killed the last one.
