Choosing shore cords and adapters
Two numbers decide almost everything here: your rig's service (30-amp or 50-amp) and the pedestal you're plugging into. A 30-amp RV uses a TT-30 plug on a single 120-volt circuit, while a 50-amp RV uses a larger 14-50 plug that's actually two 120-volt legs. Get those straight and the rest is picking the right adapter for the gap.
- Cord amperage and gauge. Match the cord to your service. A heavier gauge runs cooler and drops less voltage over a long pull, which matters when the pedestal sits far from the site.
- Dogbone adapters. These bridge mismatches — a 30-amp rig to a 50-amp post, or down to a 15-amp household outlet at home. An adapter changes the connector, not the available power: on a 15-amp outlet a 30-amp rig still only has 15 amps, so ease off the air conditioner.
- Locking and grip connectors. Twist-lock and grip-handle ends stay put in wind and pull apart without a fight — easier on the plug and on your hands in the cold.
- Generator adapters. If you run a generator, an L5-30 or duplex-15 adapter matches its outlets to your RV cord.
Before you trust an unfamiliar pedestal, a plug-in circuit tester flags an open ground or reversed polarity in seconds. For the damage a bad post can do beyond that — low voltage and surges — pair the cord with a surge protector or EMS, and protect the panel itself with the right fuses and breakers.
