Picking the right cleaner for the mess
Each of these cleaners is chemistry aimed at a single problem. Black streak remover breaks down oxidized runoff from roof seams, a bug remover softens the dried protein in splatter, and a metal polish cuts oxidation off aluminum and chrome. Reach for the wrong one and you just scrub harder, so it pays to read the mess before you spray.
- Black streak remover. Those dark stripes below the roofline are oxidized roof runoff, not loose dirt, and a dedicated remover like the Star Brite Instant Black Streak Remover breaks them down where soap won't. It is the most common RV-specific cleaning job there is.
- Bug and tar remover. The Valterra Bug & Tar Remover softens dried bug splatter and road tar off the front cap and paint so you are not grinding them off dry and scratching the finish.
- Awning cleaner. Vinyl and acrylic awnings grow mildew and collect grime; the Dicor and Thetford awning cleaners lift stains without bleaching the fabric. Biodegradable formulas count here, since the runoff hits the ground.
- Metal and wheel cleaners. A polish like the Chemical Guys Heavy Metal cleans and protects chrome, aluminum, and stainless, while an iron remover such as Decon Pro pulls embedded brake dust and iron fallout out of wheel finishes.
- Shop cleaners. Brake and parts cleaner and belt dressing cover the mechanical side, degreasing components and quieting a squealing belt.
Most of these are spot-and-scrub jobs done before a full wash. Knock out the black streaks and bugs first, then wash the whole rig with a soap from wash & wax. Roof runoff drives most of the streaking to begin with, so a good roof cleaning upstream means less to fight on the walls.
