Washing and waxing a big rig

On an RV, wax earns its keep as protection more than shine: it is the sacrificial layer that takes the UV hit so your paint or gelcoat does not. The sequence is simple. Wash with a soap that leaves existing wax alone, correct any oxidation with polish or compound, then seal with wax. Scale is the real challenge, which is why the tools here matter as much as the chemistry.

• Wash soap. A concentrated, non-stripping soap like the Star Brite Wash & Wax, or a matte-safe soap for satin finishes, cleans without pulling off the wax you already laid down. Wash top to bottom so grit rinses away instead of dragging across lower panels.
• Wax type. A carnauba cream or liquid wax like Butter Wet Wax gives deep gloss and solid UV protection; a cleaner wax such as Slick Finish combines light polishing and wax in one step for a finish that is dull but not badly oxidized.
• Polish and compound. For chalky, oxidized fiberglass, a compound like the ceramic-safe V34 hybrid cuts the dead layer before you wax. Match the aggressiveness to the damage, and start with the least abrasive that works.
• Applicators and reach tools. Dual-sided microfiber sponges handle wash and polish, and a long anodized wash handle like the Camco 2-foot unit lets you reach the upper walls and roof edge from the ground instead of climbing.

Wax the painted and fiberglass sides, but keep it off the roof: a rubber membrane wants a dedicated roof product, not car wax. Knock out the black streaks and bugs with a specialty cleaner before you wash, and for the vinyl, rubber, and fabric that wax won't touch, finish with a UV protectant.
