Slide Toppers
A slide topper is the short awning mounted above each slide-out, and its whole job is keeping leaves, twigs, and standing water off the slide roof so the seal stays clean. Go without one and grit grinds into the slide gasket while water pools where it should not. Most of this category is Carefree slide-out awning fabric in the common widths, roughly 65 to 145 inches, in black and white vinyl, alongside wind deflectors and extrusion covers.

Choosing slide topper fabric
Slide toppers are sized by the width of the slide-out opening, and that one measurement decides the fit. Too short and the ends of the slide sit exposed; too long and it will not tension properly. Measure the slide box width, not the roller, and match it to the fabric length Carefree lists, like 89", 137", or 145".
- Measure the slide, not the roller. Take the outside width of the slide-out and match it to the fabric length. Pieces here run from 65" for small slides up to 145" for a big living-room slide. A single rig can carry several widths, so measure each one.
- Color: black or white. Black vinyl hides dirt and streaking and is the popular pick; white keeps the slide roof cooler and suits lighter graphics. They function the same, so it comes down to looks and how often you want to see the grime.
- Fabric only vs. complete. Several of these are fabric only, hardware not included, meaning you reuse your existing roller and arms. If your roller and spring are still good and only the vinyl failed, that is the cheaper route. Confirm what is in the box first.
- Wind deflectors. On the SideOut Kover III setup, a deflector such as the SOKIII component stops the topper ballooning and flapping at highway speed, which is what tears toppers and wears out the spring. Worth adding if yours flaps.
- Extrusion covers. The B&B Molders extrusion cover caps the mounting rail so it looks finished and keeps water from tracking behind it.
Slide toppers use vinyl much like your main patio awning, so if that is the piece that tore, see awning fabric. Replacing topper fabric means working against spring tension on the roller, so give your awning hardware and arms a look while you are up there.
