Fitting a microwave in an RV
An RV microwave is usually a built-in that drops into a dedicated cabinet cutout, not a countertop unit you set wherever there is room. Two things decide what fits: the opening it goes into and the power you have to run it.
- Cabinet cutout and size. Built-ins like the Greystone 0.9 cu. ft. are sized to a standard RV opening. Measure the width, height, and depth of your cutout before ordering, since RV cabinets leave no slack.
- Wattage and power source. A microwave draws a heavy 120-volt load. On shore power that is no issue; off-grid it needs a strong inverter and battery bank, and it will not run on 12 volts alone.
- Capacity. Most RV built-ins land near 0.9 cu. ft., enough for a dinner plate but not a holiday turkey. That trade keeps the footprint down in a small galley.
- Trim and venting. A built-in needs clearance around it to shed heat, so avoid boxing it in. Check whether your model calls for a trim kit to close the gap cleanly.
- Keeping it clean. A vented splatter cover like the Camco one here keeps sauce off the roof of the cavity, which beats scrubbing it out in a cramped galley.
The microwave usually shares a corner with the cooktop and its range hood, so plan the three together. To run it away from hookups, size a pure sine inverter to the microwave's surge draw.
