Choosing a pure-sine inverter for your RV
Pure sine comes down to waveform quality. Cheaper modified-sine inverters put out a blocky approximation of AC that resistive loads tolerate but sensitive electronics do not: you hear it as hum, see it as a fuzzy picture, or hit outright faults on medical devices and variable-speed motors. For anything you care about, pure sine is worth the premium.
- Continuous wattage. Size to the largest set of loads running at once. The PROwatt SW 600 covers a laptop, TV, and phone chargers; the Xantrex XM 1000 and XM 1800 handle a small microwave; the Go Power! GP-3000HD runs heavier tools and appliances.
- Surge rating. Motors and compressors draw several times their running watts for a split second at startup. The GP-3000HD's 6,000-watt surge headroom is what lets it start loads a same-wattage unit would trip on, so check surge, not just continuous.
- GFCI and USB. Units like the PROwatt SW 600 include GFCI outlets for shock protection and a USB port for direct device charging, handy when you don't want to give up an outlet to a wall charger.
- Remote control. Mount the inverter near the batteries and run a remote switch to the living area. The Samlex RC-15A and SAM-series remotes and the Xantrex PROwatt SW panel switch let you power the inverter on and off, and show voltage and overload status, without reaching the unit.
- Battery bank and wiring. Watts pull amps from the battery: a 2,000-watt draw is roughly 170 amps at 12 volts. Your bank and cable have to deliver that, so size the battery and charging system to match, and don't undersize the DC cable.
If you also want the inverter to charge your batteries from shore power, look at an inverter-charger instead of a standalone inverter. And a standalone inverter doesn't manage shore-versus-generator switching; that is a transfer switch's job.
