Matching a holding-tank treatment to how you camp

Every product here chases the same two goals: break down waste and paper so nothing mounds up under the sensor, and keep the tank from smelling. Chemistry is what sets them apart, and that matters more than the scent printed on the label.

• Bioactive and enzyme formulas. Star Brite Bio Odor and Thetford's triple-enzyme AquaMAX dripacks rely on live bacteria and enzymes to digest waste. They go easy on tanks and septic systems, but they act slowly and bleach kills them.
• Nitrate formulas. Star Brite Odor Away runs on nitrates rather than formaldehyde, giving strong odor control that still passes at dump stations and septic systems.
• Format. Drop-in pods such as Camco TST and Kronen's pre-measured pods skip the pouring and guesswork. Liquids let you scale the dose to tank size, and dry packets like Pure Power Blue pack small and shrug off freezing temperatures.
• Formaldehyde. A few old-school treatments still use it. It deodorizes hard but punishes septic systems, and dump stations turn it away more often every season, so the formaldehyde-free options here sidestep the issue.
• Scented versus unscented. Valterra Odorlos leaves out fragrance for anyone who prefers no smell over a berry one. Most others ship in a scent if you want the tank reading fresh.

Add a dose after every dump along with a couple gallons of water so the chemical can slosh through the tank, because a dry tank is a smelly one. If the monitor still shows full after a solid treatment and rinse, the culprit is buildup on the probes, which puts it in tank sensor territory. Round things out with the right toilet chemicals at the bowl, and keep your sewer and dump gear within reach for cleanup.
