RV Fuses & Breakers
An RV runs two electrical systems, and both protect themselves with fuses and breakers — the 12-volt house side with blade and glass fuses, the 120-volt shore side with panel breakers. When something quits, a blown fuse is the first thing to check and usually the cheapest fix. Matching a fuse or breaker to your RV
The golden rule is that a fuse protects the wire, not the device. Its amp rating should match the circuit it sits in — going bigger to stop nuisance blows just means the wire overheats before the fuse does, which is how electrical fires start. If a fuse keeps blowing, the fix is finding the short, not fitting a heavier fuse.
Sorting out which type you need comes down to a few things:
- Blade fuses (ATC/ATM/ATO). The plastic automotive fuses in your 12-volt distribution panel. ATC/ATO are standard size, ATM (mini) are smaller. Match the amp rating and the color — they're coded the same across brands.
- Glass tube fuses (AGC). Older circuits and some appliances use glass AGC fuses like the Bussmann ones here. Check the length as well as the rating; a same-amp fuse of the wrong length won't seat in the holder.
- Maxi fuses. High-current circuits — inverters, tow-vehicle charge lines — use the larger Maxi blade fuses in the 30-80 amp range.
- Panel breakers. Your 120-volt load center takes Type-QP breakers, and the Siemens and AP Products units here interchange. A GFCI breaker adds shock protection to a whole circuit, handy if an outlet near the sink or outside isn't already protected.
Keep a few spares of each amperage in the rig — a blown fuse always happens after the parts store closes. If a breaker itself is failing it's usually easier to swap than to chase, and the wire and connectors to do it cleanly are one category over.
