Choosing day/night shades and reflective covers
These two do related but different jobs. A day/night shade controls light and privacy at the window; a reflective cover controls heat. On a west-facing window in July, or a cold morning boondocking, the reflective layer is what actually keeps the coach comfortable — the shade just decides how much you can see out.
- Reflective covers. Camco SunShield covers use bubble-foil insulation to reflect radiant heat at the glass, where it does the most good. They come in set sizes — 50x26, 62x30, 62x26 — so measure the window glass, not the frame, and pick the closest size up. Trim to fit if you're between sizes.
- Day vs. night layer. The day layer filters light and keeps privacy while letting you see out; the night layer blacks the window out for sleep. If only one layer has failed, you may be able to replace just that shade rather than the whole unit.
- Replacement shade material. A worn or torn shade — like the AP Products thin replacement shade — swaps into an existing head rail and hardware, so you keep the mechanism and just renew the fabric. Match the color and width to what's mounted.
- Hold-downs. RV Designer hold-downs clip the bottom rail so the shade doesn't swing in transit, in clear or beige to match the trim. The same clips that quiet a pleated blind work here.
