Sunlight does the real damage to RV surfaces: it fades decals, chalks fiberglass, cracks vinyl, and dries out leather and rubber long before anything wears out mechanically. Protectants put a barrier back over those surfaces so the UV works on a coating instead of the material underneath. Choosing the right protectant for each surface
Vinyl, leather, fabric, and metal each fail in their own way, so no single product covers them all. UV blocking runs through most of them, but a leather conditioner drives oils back into a hide while a fabric guard beads water off a weave, and neither substitutes for the other. Pair the product with the material and reapply on a schedule, since sun and washing wear these coatings off.
- Vinyl and rubber UV sprays. Products like Star Brite Ultimate Vinyl Guard and its 32 oz spray-on version block the sun on seat vinyl, trim, tires, and gaskets. Reapply every few weeks in peak summer, since UV protection is sacrificial and washes off.
- Leather conditioners. A cream like the Chemical Guys Vintage Series Leather Conditioner puts oils back into seats and interior hides so they stay supple instead of cracking. Leather bakes inside a closed-up rig, so it dries out faster than most people expect.
- Fabric guards and top protectants. The 303 Fabric Guard and the convertible-top repellent restore water beading on awnings, canopies, and soft tops without stiffening the weave. Apply to clean, dry fabric so it bonds.
- Specialty surfaces. Wheel sealants like Wheel Guard Max Coat keep brake dust from bonding to rims, and Permatex anti-seize on fasteners keeps hardware from galling, useful anywhere two dissimilar metals meet.
Protect a surface after you clean it, not before, since these bond to bare, dry material. If a roof or awning still holds grime, run the specialty cleaners or a proper roof cleaner first, then seal it. For painted sides, a wax from wash & wax does the same protective job on a different surface.
