Vent Insulators
When the vent is shut but the sun's still cooking the cabin through it, a reflective insulator is the fix. These are foam panels sized to press into a standard roof vent or skylight opening — they block radiant heat coming down in summer, slow heat loss in winter, and black out the light so a bedroom vent isn't a skylight at 6 a.m.

Getting the right vent insulator
Vent insulators do quiet, unglamorous work: they plug the biggest thermal hole in your roofline when the fan isn't running. A single-pane vent lid conducts heat and light straight through, and a reflective foam panel wedged into the frame stops most of it. Picking one comes down to size and where it's going.
- Size to the opening. Standard roof vents take a 14" x 14" panel. Shower skylights are usually bigger and domed — a 14" x 22" domed insulator is shaped to fill that deeper recess instead of sitting flat across it.
- Flat vent vs. domed skylight. A flat foam panel suits a standard vent. For a raised skylight dome, a domed insulator with a foam core fills the extra depth so heat isn't trapped in the bubble above your head.
- Black-out vs. reflective. A black-out panel kills morning light in a bedroom vent; a reflective face bounces radiant heat. Camco's panels do both, with a foil-style reflective side and a dark interior face.
- Friction fit. These wedge into the vent frame and pull out by hand — no tools, no hardware. That makes them easy to pop in for a hot afternoon and pull for ventilation at night.
An insulator handles the vent when it's closed; when you actually want airflow, that's a powered roof fan. And if the lid above the insulator is cracked or letting water in, fix that first with a new vent lid or cover — an insulator seals heat and light, not rain.
