Trailer Connectors & Wiring
Every light, brake, and charge signal between your tow vehicle and trailer funnels through a single connector, so a corroded pin or the wrong plug is where most towing headaches begin. This category covers the common connector styles — 4-way flat, 5-pin, 6-way round, and 7-way RV blade — along with the brand-fit pigtails, adapters, and custom harnesses that bridge whatever doesn't line up.

Matching trailer connectors, plugs, and wiring
Most towing-electrical faults trace back to the connector, and picking the right one turns on two questions: how many pins you need and what shape they sit in. More pins carry more functions — a 4-way flat handles running lights, turn signals, and brake lights, while a 7-way RV blade adds trailer brakes, a charge line, reverse, and 12-volt power.
- Connector style and pin count. Common styles run 4-way flat, 5-pin, 6-way round, and 7-way RV blade. A 4-way is lights only; step up to 6- or 7-way once the trailer has electric brakes or a breakaway to power. Match the trailer plug to the tow vehicle socket.
- Brand-fit pigtails. Some trailers use an odd plug at the frame. RV Pigtails makes model-specific adapters — Jayco and Coachmen/Viking 7-to-6-way pigtails, for instance — so you don't rewire the trailer just to change a connector.
- Adapters for mismatches. When the ends don't match, an adapter bridges them: a Hopkins 6-way round to 4-way flat, or a 7-way to 6/8-way for fold-down and pop-up campers. An adapter changes the connector, not what's wired, so a 4-way still won't run brakes.
- Vehicle-specific harnesses. A custom-fit harness like the Draw-Tite units for select Nissan and Suzuki models plugs into the factory wiring with no splicing, which is cleaner and won't trip a light-out warning.
- Connector material. Out in the weather, die-cast zinc bodies like RV Designer's Pollak-style plugs hold up better than cheap pot-metal, and sealed backs keep corrosion off the pins.
- Test lights and add-ons. A cheap LED tester confirms every function before you pull out, and accessories like a self-grounding backup alarm wire into the same harness.
Clean connectors are what let your brake controller and breakaway system actually reach the brakes. For 12-volt pigtails and connectors on the house side of the rig, the wiring and pigtails category covers those.
