Wattage is the number on the box, but it only means something once you know what you're running and for how long. A 10-watt trickle panel holds a stored battery over the winter; a 100- or 130-watt folding kit keeps lights, the water pump, and phone charging going through a weekend off-grid; a solar-generator kit brings its own battery and outlets for small AC loads anywhere. Sizing a panel or kit to how you camp

Start from the load, not the wattage. Keeping a battery topped up in storage asks almost nothing; living off the panels for days asks for real panel area and a bank to hold the charge. The Go Power! and Southwire options here reach from one end of that to the other.

  • Trickle chargers, around 10 watts. The Go Power! trickle kit puts about 0.6 amp back into a battery, enough to cancel the self-discharge of a stored RV or vehicle. It runs without a controller and simply keeps a full battery full.
  • Folding kits, 100 to 130 watts. The GP-PSK-130 (130W, 10A controller, adjustable legs, carry case) and the DuraLite 100W (foldable panel, 30A PWM controller) prop up in the sun while the rig sits in shade, then pack away when you leave.
  • Solar-generator combos. The Southwire kit teams a 100W panel with a power station, giving you storage and AC outlets in one box, handy for a CPAP, a laptop, or small electronics without tapping the coach's house system.
  • Bundled or separate controller. Portable kits generally include the controller; a bare panel needs one added, while a trickle panel needs none. Check what's in the box so you don't double up or fall short.
