Choosing the right repair tape

Not all tape does the same job. Some is a permanent seam-and-leak seal you can drive on for years, some is a get-you-home emergency patch, and some isn't waterproofing at all — it's the foam gasket that goes under a piece of trim. Figure out which job you've got before you buy, because a roadside patch and a proper repair use different products.

• Width and length. Match the roll to the repair. A hairline seam takes a 4-inch roll like the Sika Multiseal Plus; a wider tear or a section along an edge wants the 6-inch. The Cofair Quick Roof patches come in set sizes for spot repairs — grab the size that covers the damage with margin all around.
• Clear vs. white. Clear tape, like the Cofair Quick Roof Clear patches, lets you see the repair and blends on lighter surfaces; white matches most RV roofs and reflects heat. Both seal the same — pick for looks and where it's going.
• UV resistance. Roof tape lives in full sun, so it has to be UV-stable to keep from drying out and lifting. The Sika Multiseal Plus is UV-resistant and built to stay put on the roof; cheaper general-purpose tape can bake and fail in a season.
• Foam cap tape. The grey foam cap tapes are a different job entirely — a mylar-backed PVC foam that seals the gap under roof edge trim and moldings, not a surface patch. If you're pulling trim to reseal it, this is what goes underneath.
• Reflective tape. The Peterson conspicuity kit is DOT-style red/white reflective tape for trailer visibility, not waterproofing. Handy for being seen on the shoulder at night.

Surface prep makes or breaks a tape repair: it has to be clean, dry, and above the tape's minimum application temperature, or it won't stick. For seams and penetrations you plan to keep sealed long-term, tape pairs well with a bead of lap sealant over the edges. And if you're taping the same spot over and over, the roof may be telling you it's ready for a coating or new membrane.
