Choosing latches, catches, and hinges that hold
A catch that works in a house kitchen can still let go on a washboard road, so the priority here is positive holding — a mechanism that actively resists opening. Match the part to how the door moves and how firmly it has to stay shut.
- Self-closing versus free-swinging hinges. Self-closing hinges draw a door the last inch shut and help keep it there, the right choice for cabinets that drift open. Free-swinging hinges let a door rest wherever you leave it, better for a pantry or a door you prop open.
- Barrel and bullet catches. A barrel catch with a nylon clip snaps a door closed with a detent you can feel. The RV Designer set comes six to a box, which suits doing a whole run of cabinets consistently.
- Finish. Hinges come in brass, nickel, and unfinished — match the finish to the doors around a repair so it doesn't stand out.
- Spring-loaded hinges. These add closing tension for doors that won't stay put, working as hinge and closer in one.
- Snap hooks and bunk clamps. Whitecap bronze and stainless snap hooks handle tie-downs and gear; a zinc fold-out bunk clamp holds a bunk or fold-away in its stowed position.
