A disconnect switch isolates your battery bank with one turn: it kills parasitic draws in storage, makes service safe, and gives you a fast shutoff in an emergency. Picking the right disconnect switch

The right switch comes down to how much current your bank moves and how you want to mount it. Everything from a single house battery to a large inverter bank is covered here, so start with your amperage and work out from there.

  • Amp rating. Match the switch to your bank's continuous load with headroom to spare. Blue Sea's m-, e-, and ML-Series run 300 to 500 amps continuous for larger banks and inverters, while Battery Doctor's 100 to 125-amp knob switches suit a single house or chassis battery.
  • Mounting style. A top-post knob like the Battery Doctor threads straight onto the battery terminal with no panel cutting. Rotary switches such as the Blue Sea m-Series and e-Series bolt to a bulkhead and take cable lugs, the tidier look for a fixed install.
  • Single vs. selector. A single-circuit on/off is all most rigs need. If you run two banks, a 4-position selector lets you choose battery one, two, both, or off from one dial.
  • Remote and fused options. The ML-Series adds remote switching with a manual override, and Battery Doctor's fused-bypass top-post keeps a small charging circuit live while the main bank is switched off.

Wire the switch on the main lead close to your house batteries, and do not count on it for overcurrent protection, which is the job of your fuses and breakers. If the switch is there to stop storage drain, a charger or maintainer handles the other half of that problem.
